Referrals

A referral from your General Practitioner (GP) or Psychiatrist is required to access Medicare rebates for clinical psychology sessions.

If you plan to pay privately (or access private health insurance rebates, or use NDIS funding) for your treatment, you do not need a referral. However, you are welcome to provide one.

General Practitioners and Private Psychiatrists

Medicare: If your patient is dealing with mental health difficulties, you can complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP) and referral letter. This will allow your patient to access the Medicare rebate for up to 10 individual therapy sessions in a calendar year (with a maximum of 6 sessions per course of treatment). Medicare referral letters must include the following:

  • Date of referral

  • Patient’s full name, date of birth, and home address

  • Patient’s diagnosis or symptoms

  • Request for services under Better Access

  • Number of treatment sessions requested (maximum of 6 per referral)

  • Referring doctor’s Medicare Provider Number and signature

NDIS: We can accept referrals if your patient is self-managed or plan-managed under the NDIS. We are not able to accept NDIA-Managed referrals.

Private: If a patient does not meet the criteria for a Mental Health Care Plan, they can still pay for the service privately, and if they have private health insurance, they may be eligible for a rebate.

You can fax or email your referral directly to us.
